About R Bakery — Baking in North York Since 1979
About Us
Our Story — Since 1979
For more than four decades, R Bakery has been part of the North York community, bringing together the warmth of a neighbourhood bakery with the tradition of European-style baking. Since 1979, our focus has remained simple: prepare fresh, quality food with care and create a place people enjoy coming back to.
Over the years, R Bakery has grown from a local bakery into a familiar destination for fresh breads, pastries, custom cakes, breakfast, sandwiches, coffee, and everyday favourites. While the menu has evolved, the values behind it have stayed the same — quality ingredients, time-honoured recipes, thoughtful preparation, and friendly service.
Today, we continue that tradition from our Marlee Avenue location, welcoming longtime customers and new faces alike. Whether you’re stopping in for your morning coffee, picking up something fresh for home, or celebrating a special occasion with one of our cakes, every visit is part of the story we’ve been building since 1979.

The Gomes Family
Behind R Bakery is a family that understands a bakery is about more than what comes out of the oven.
Under owner Eduardo Gomes, the Gomes family continues the bakery’s long-standing commitment to quality, hospitality and the neighbourhood it serves. The goal isn’t to make R Bakery feel overly polished or complicated. It’s to keep it warm, familiar and dependable—the kind of place you can return to week after week.
That approach can be felt throughout the bakery. It’s in the early mornings, the full bread shelves, the cakes prepared for family celebrations and the conversations that happen across the counter.
For the Gomes family, continuing a bakery with roots stretching back to 1979 means respecting its history while giving today’s customers more reasons to make R Bakery part of their own routines.

Yea, this place seems to cater to regulars and the hospitality is to a minimum. Sorry if I asked for Portugal buns, Even though it's a Portuguese bakery. Sorry if I asked for spicy and you gave me sweet peppers. Sorry if I asked for extra pork and you gave me extra fat. Thank you. This place is a real gem.Posted on Google![]()

I had a great americano, and a custard tart and a salami and cheese croissant. Although the croissant was not really flaky croissant crust as I expected, more a yeasted wrap dough or something but it was good. Awesome looking breads and treats!! Will get that huge loaf of 'Nonna bread' next visit to Toronto :)Posted on Google![]()

Rose and John are absolutely amazing - my mom has a special diet due to her IBS and these two are super accommodating. The attention and kindness is wonderful and you are lucky to have them on your team!!Posted on Google![]()

It took us 20 minutes to pick something to eat because everything looked so good but we eventually landed on a danish and a tiramisu (along with two drinks from the fridge.) A singular Diet Coke came out to be almost five dollars! They served us our danish but gave us a brownie instead of our tiramisu. They did not have many customers, the order was four items with only two required for the worker to grab. The tiramisu was 3 inches long, 1 in wide, and four dollars—obviously, I’m expecting a wave of heaven to enter my mouth. I would be mistaken. Pure cream. It tastes like pure cream. Danish was decent at least.

A Bakery Made for the Neighbourhood
We’ve been around long enough to know that the best neighbourhood businesses become part of people’s everyday lives.
You might visit for a loaf of bread on the way home. Come back Saturday morning for breakfast. Order a birthday cake a few weeks later. Then stop by again because you remembered the pastry you liked last time.
That’s the relationship we want R Bakery to have with North York.
We’re proud to welcome customers from the Marlee and Eglinton area, Cedarvale, Forest Hill, Lawrence Heights, Yorkdale, and communities throughout North York and surrounding Toronto.
